Description

Graphite on paper, 25 pages, 350 × 252 mm

This sketchbook is divided between sketches of exotic animals and sketches of people and places in Spain. The sketchbook has been filled in from the front with pictures of animals, then turned upside down and filled in from the back with pictures done in Spain. One page includes an inscription relating to the Spanish Civil War. It reads 'Leada 29 [possibly Lerida where Browne stayed for some time]. Waiting in the Casa del Pueblo. A peasant bribed by 30 Fascists to tranport them in coffins. Eight fascists recognised in L. carrying G.7 flag ste. [cell or coll] shot. At Saragossa [Zaragoza] civilians and peasants are being driven forward by 7. Death rate very high.'
