Most of the drawings in this sketchbook are studies for St. Matthew's, Northampton, painted in 1946. Sutherland began systematic work on the commission in April that year and started the final picture in June; it was unveiled and dedicated on 16 November. However, there are several sketches for the 'Chimére' theme on which he seems to have been working at the same time.
