Description

Graphite, pastel, chalk, ink, felt pen, and watercolour on paper, 49 pages plus covers, 1 page is missing, 241 × 170 mm

This sketchbook appears to have been used at intervals between 1961-65 as it includes studies both for the portrait of Dr Arpad Plesch, painted in 1961, and for 'The Captive' of 1963-1964 and 'Form on a Terrace' of 1965 (for instance). There is also a text consisting of draft answers to a questionnaire about his work, perhaps written as preparation for a BBC television profile, made in 1967, in which he was interviewed by Giorgio Soavi, or else for the guidance of Pier Paolo Ruggerini who made a film about him for Italian television in the same year.
