Graphite, conté crayon, watercolour, and gouache on paper, 6 pages, no covers, 205 × 235 mm

This is a small fragment of a sketchbook and only includes two drawings; the other pages are blank. Both are studies of opencast coal mines, a subject which was suggested to him by the War Artists' Advisory Committee in July-August 1943 and which followed after the series of limestone quarries. The studies were made in Wales, at Pwl-du, Abergavenny.
