Self-portraits Commissioned by Art News and Review

1949–68

Sorry, no image available

Art News and Review was set up in 1949 by Richard Gainsborough. The principle purpose of the review was to list all, and review many, of the exhibitions current in Britain. Richard Gainsborough ran the Review until he died, aged 73, in 1969. The architect John Gainsborough took over from his father and was in charge of the Review until 1978. The magazine still exists today under its new title The Arts Review. All the portraits in this collection were commissioned by Art News and Review between 1949 and 1959 to illustrate the front cover of the magazine. Bernard Denvir, the first editor, conceived the idea of inviting living artists to create self-portraits for the front page, with an accompanying article often on the occasion of an exhibition. This collection is just over a third of the total portraits published by the magazine.
