Many of the etchings in this series question the utopian ideals of Western abstraction. Here Bennett refers to the monochrome ultramarine blue paintings of French conceptual artist Yves Klein. One of these is on view as part of the ‘Start Display’ on Level 2. With his monochrome paintings, Klein wanted to create spaces of ‘pure feeling’ that could induce a kind of spiritual experience in the viewer. For Bennett this is an invitation to retreat from reality – an option that the artist believes is not available to people who have systematically been oppressed by colonialism and white supremacy.
