- Presented by Leanne and Caitlin Bennett in memory of and admiration for Gordon Bennett 2019
This etching is based on the initial sketch for a 1992 installation Bennett titled Self Portrait (Heritage). It resembles a museum cabinet with ‘specimens’ in glass jars. Each jar contains the silhouette of an Aboriginal person. By portraying Aboriginal people and implicitly including himself as ‘specimens’, Bennett queries the classification systems of anthropology and biology. These were used by European institutions to justify racism with pseudo-scientific theories. For Bennett, they present ‘Aboriginal cultures... frozen into “authentic” and its opposite (inauthentic, creole etc)...’
