The scene is a street in a medieval town. The heretic, a woman, leads the procession; on the right, an officer of justice carries the warrant for her execution, and farther right walks the gravedigger with his tools. Monks' accompany her, and in the background are some spectators in modern dress, one of which is a self-portrait of the artist.
