T00560 L'HôTEL SULLY, COURTYARD WITH FIGURES (?) 1944–5
Canvas, 54×66 3/8 (139·5×168·5).
Presented by Richard L. Feigen on behalf of the Richard Feigen Gallery, Chicago, through the American Friends of the Tate Gallery 1962.
Coll: Miss Erica Brausen, purchased form the artist 1944–5; Hanover Gallery; Richard Feigen Gallery.
Exh: Redfern Gallery, April 1947 (14); Hanover Gallery, March–April 1950 (5 or 6), as ‘Figure in a Room: I’ or ‘II’.
A label of the Richard Feigen Gallery on the back gives the date 2 June 1944 and the title ‘Oblito’. However, this was not the artist's original title; that used here was confirmed by the artist at the time of the Redfern Gallery exhibition. According to Miss Erica Brausen the picture was painted at the Hôtel Bisson soon after the artist's return to Paris, 1944–5, though the artist's widow identifies it as a picture painted in London and Norfolk in 1943–4 (letter of 30 April 1964).
