Catalogue entry

This is one of the many sketches that Turner made of Gylen Castle from the promontory across the bay of Port a’ Chroinn to the south-east of Kerrera. Unlike similar sketches of this view from the south (folios 69–69a; D26876–D26877), Turner has paid attention to the clouds, the light and shadows on the ruin and the rocks on which it stands. This is just one of twenty-five sketches that Turner made of Gylen Castle: folios 63 verso–75 verso (D26865–D26889); see folio 73 verso (D26885) for further details.
