Catalogue entry

This sketch of Gylen Castle belongs to a sequence of views made from the promontory at the south-east of the island of Kerrera: folios 68–73 (D26874–D26884). The present view is from the south-south-east and was made from a height, so that we look down on the crags and the bay between the two promontories in the foreground. Turner’s sketches of the castle fill twenty-five pages of the Staffa sketchbook (folios 63 verso–75 verso; D26865–D26889).
