Turner Bequest CCLIX 50
Display caption
Several of Turner's formative years were spent making architectural drawings. This training informed his interest in new and historic buildings throughout his life. In this sombre evocation of an unidentified church (or cathedral) interior he arranges the various planes of the architecture in a way that creates a tremendous sense of depth within the picture space.
