Catalogue entry

With the page turned vertically, Turner has made a small drawing of Sandwich beyond the meandering River Stour. The view appears to be to the west, with the towers of St Clement’s and St Peter’s Churches at the left and centre respectively, the sun low over the latter. Below is a sketch of two figures presumably observed at or near the scene. For other views of the town, see under folio 6 recto (D35767).
At the gutter is a slight continuation of the view of nearby Deal Castle on folio 34 recto opposite (D35818; Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 33).
