Catalogue entry

Although these two views of landscapes from a hilltop come at the start of a series of views of Edinburgh from St Anthony’s Chapel (see folio 81 verso; D26415), there are no topographical or architectural features that make these sketches easily identifiable as anything other than a possible view north towards the Firth of Forth. The only possible clue is the mound at the left which, while not resembling Edinburgh Castle Rock here, does somewhat resemble the sketch of the castle on folio 83 verso (D26419).
The smaller sketch at the bottom of the page carries an inscription that could say ‘Dollar’, suggesting that this sketch is in fact a view towards the town of Dollar from Castle Campbell, various sketches of which are nearby in this sketchbook; see folio 70 verso (D26393) for references.
