This year’s lecture on modern British art is given by Éric de Chassey, Director of the French Academy in Rome. Although pop art is often presented as a reaction against abstract expressionism, de Chassey argues that not only did British abstract painters such as Robyn Denny and Richard Smith participate in pop abstraction but that in the mid-1960s it became an international trend.
