Taking inspiration from some of our lively abstract artworks by Agnes Marten, Cy Twombly and Huguette Caland, we want you and your family to come and get ‘painterly’ with us on the south landscape at Tate Modern. This means unleashing your inner artist and creating artwork with us in fun and unusual ways – all while using more than a dab of paint.
To help construct your work of art, we will be encouraging you to get messy (in a good way) using action painting to project paint (don’t worry, it’s water-based as well as non-toxic). You’ll do this using our loaded tools, such as water blasters, firing your paint onto canvas.
You can also use your brushes or hands, but either way, leave the white T-shirts at home! You can buy aprons from our Tate shop before you start the activity, and we’d encourage you to bring a change of clothes so you can clean up afterward. Get ready to shoot, splash and squelch – we guarantee you’ll have loads of fun.
As this is in the South Landscape area, an outdoor space, during extreme weather conditions or if it gets very busy, the activity may temporarily close or move to an indoor location. Please note, you may be asked to queue at busy times.
And don’t forget, the Painterly Make Studio will be continuing in the Clore Hub during this time too, so you can make more masterpieces inside!
We also offer relaxed hours for neurodivergent children and adults and any other visitors with sensory needs who prefer a more relaxed experience. The outdoor session will therefore be closed for an hour on 25 October for this purpose, find out more. This event has sold out.
