Welcome to Tate Liverpool + RIBA North

While our home on the Royal Albert Dock is being redeveloped, we have been temporarily based at RIBA North, Mann Island.

There are no further Tate exhibitions planned for our temporary space but visitors can explore two small displays curated by RIBA.

Visitors can also enjoy a small area for families, a ground floor display detailing the exciting plans for our new building and a small display upstairs showcasing the history of Tate Liverpool.

Tate Liverpool will reopen at the Royal Albert Dock in 2027.

Directions

Walk Cycle Ride Drive

Approaching from the Strand, continue straight on Strand Street until you reach Mann Island. Turn left and you'll reach the Mann Island development, a complex of three black buildings that sit between the Strand, the Canning Dock and the Museum of Liverpool.

Bike racks are located close to the gallery, opposite the entrance to the Museum of Liverpool, beside the Great Western Railway building.

Liverpool ONE Bus Station on Canning Street is the closest bus station, but some buses drop off at the Pier Head, right next door to the gallery. Check the Merseytravel website for details of local bus services.

The nearest train station to Tate Liverpool is James Street station, Liverpool L27PQ, which is approximately 2 minutes away. Liverpool Lime Street station, Liverpool's mainline railway station, is approximately 20 minutes away. Moorfields station, served by the Northern and Wirral Lines, is approximately 5 minutes away. Check the Merseyrail website for details of local rail services.

Mersey Ferries from Seacombe and Woodside on the Wirral call at the Pier Head, which is approximately 2 minutes away. Check the Mersey Ferries website for details of ferry services.

To get to Tate Liverpool + RIBA North, follow the brown signs to the Waterfront. The following car park is near Tate Liverpool + RIBA North:
Q-Park Liverpool ONE, with 2,000 underground spaces: 35 Strand Street, Liverpool L1 8LT.

The nearest coach station is on North Street (Liverpool City Centre), served by National Express coaches. More information for drivers.

Visitors may also like to make use of Liverpool’s Shopmobility service, on the third floor of the Liverpool ONE shopping centre. Equipment must be booked in advance and there is a charge. More information for drivers.

Entry details

There is no need to book to visit Tate Liverpool + RIBA North. Our displays are free to visit.

Schools and group visits

We would like to remind visiting schools and groups that our temporary building at RIBA North, Mann Island is much smaller than our Royal Albert Dock home.

  • Groups do not need to book to view free displays at Tate Liverpool + RIBA North
  • The recommended size for a group visiting the gallery is 15. It is important to split your group and stagger entry accordingly
  • We do not have a lunchroom or any provision to provide space to eat lunches
  • We do not have a cloakroom, lockers or an area to leave bags
  • We would recommend a visit to Tate Liverpool + RIBA North as part of a wider visit to Liverpool as opposed to the sole focus of your visit

Bag size policy

For reasons of safety and security the following are not permitted in the building:

  • bags larger than cabin bag size (55cm x 40cm x 20cm)
  • sports or recreational equipment (musical instruments)
  • large wheelie bags or boxes
  • foldable bicycles, large skateboards and child or adult scooters

Accessibility

Accessible car parking and drop-off

There are two dedicated Blue Badge parking spaces located on Brunswick Street, which is 5 minutes away from Tate Liverpool + RIBA North. See the Liverpool City Council website for details about Blue Badge parking.

Entrances to Tate Liverpool + RIBA North

Tate Liverpool is temporarily located at RIBA North, Mann Island.

  • There are no steep gradients on approaches to Tate Liverpool
  • There is level access to the gallery
  • The main doors are operated manually

Wheelchair provision

Wheelchairs are available to borrow during your gallery visit.

Assistance dogs

We welcome assistance dogs and support animals in the gallery. Drinking bowls are available – just ask a member of staff.

Blind and visually impaired visitors

Large print

We provide a range of text in large including information panels, labels and leaflets.

  • All artwork labels are available in large print - just ask a member of staff
  • Magnifiers are available in our gallery spaces, as well as overlays in a variety of colours. Please ask a member of staff for help
  • We are working on delivering access tours. Details of these tours will be available here.

Deaf and hard of hearing visitors

BSL interpretation and captioning are offered where possible.

Dyslexic visitors

  • We can provide various colours of transparent overlays, which may benefit some visitors with dyslexia when reading black and white text captions and leaflets.
  • All artwork labels are available in large print at the entrance to each exhibition or display.

Facilities at Tate Liverpool + RIBA North

Entrance

A member of staff will be in the entrance and happy to help with any questions you have about the artworks, building and facilities.

  • There is level access into the building from the entrance
  • Lighting levels are bright

Toilets

Unisex toilets are located behind gallery 2 on the first floor, which can be accessed via the stairs or lift.
The lighting levels are bright.

Accessible toilet

There is an accessible toilet behind gallery 2 on the first floor at Tate Liverpool + RIBA North, which all visitors can use.

This toilet is unisex. A key is not required for this toilet.

The door to the accessible adapted toilet opens outwards and is locked by a locking handle. As you face the toilet pan there is lateral transfer space of one metre on the left.

The tap type is sensory activated. There is a functional emergency alarm. Wall mounted grab rails are on both sides of the toilet.

Other features are placed at the following heights above floor level:

  • Toilet seat: 50 cm.
  • Hand dryer: less than 100 cm.
  • Toilet roll holder: less than100 cm.
  • Sink: less than 74 cm.

The contrast between the walls and floor is good. Wall mounted and drop down rails are available.

Changing Places toilet

The closest Changing Places toilet​ is at the Museum of Liverpool, located on their ground floor. Information is available on the Museum of Liverpool website. There is also a Changing places toilet available at the Merseyside Maritime Museum and in Liverpool One, which is located in the Liverpool One Information Centre.

Baby care facilities

There is one toilet with baby changing facilities at Tate Liverpool + RIBA North, located behind gallery 2 on the first floor.

Floors

The ground and first floor are accessible to the public.

  • There 23 steps between the ground floor and the first floor
  • The steps are clearly marked
  • The lighting level is bright

Lift

There is one lift located at the back of the ground floor.

The lifts is prioritised for people who are not able to use the stairs.

  • The lift is approximately 16 metres from the entrance
  • The dimensions of the lift are 90cm by 110cm
  • There is a mirror in the lift to aid reversing out
  • The lift has an audible announcer
  • The external call buttons are at a low level at the side of the lift
  • The lighting level in the lift is bright

Skateboards, scooters, and folding bike policy

Electric skateboards, scooters and folding bikes are not permitted in the building.

Seating

Portable folding stools are available on request – ask a member of staff or at the information desks.

Communication cards

Communication cards provide a means of visual, or nonverbal, communication.

You can use our communication cards to ask for directions to facilities in the gallery. These include toilet, seating, shop, quiet room, and exit. Show one of the cards to a member of Tate staff if you need to be shown to one of these places.

You can download these cards and print at home or save as a PDF on your portable device. There are two colour versions, with white or yellow background. Use whichever version you find easiest to read.

Tate is grateful to Anna Farley who initiated and championed the development of these communication cards. Anna is an autistic artist who makes work exploring her autism, UK disability culture and inclusion.
