Uncover captivating stories of art on the Cornish Coast

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Tate St Ives showcases work by artists including Barbara Hepworth, Marlow Moss, Naum Gabo and Patrick Heron, whose captivating works have brought international attention to St Ives and West Cornwall. Alongside displays from the Tate collection, the gallery presents modern and contemporary art from around the world through a dynamic exhibitions programme.

From November 2026, we will be updating the Tate St Ives collection displays. Different galleries will be closed at different times while this takes place. The work will be completed in early 2027.

Directions

Walk Cycle Ride Drive

The gallery and museum are within walking distance of St Ives town centre and Porthmeor beach.

There is a covered bicycle rack at the rear of Tate St Ives, by Barnoon car park. Property is left at the owner's risk. The entrance to Tate is a short walk down some steps towards Porthmeor Beach.

A frequent rail service operates between London Paddington and St Ives via Reading, Exeter, Plymouth, Bodmin, Truro, St Erth and Penzance. A local train service operates from St Erth to St Ives. For train times and booking see:

A park and ride service operates from St Erth train station, offering a scenic 10 minute journey into St Ives on the St Ives bay line. Visit Great Scenic Railways for more information.

There are regular local bus services to and from St Ives.

Traveline - local public transport information

There are daily National Express coach services from Victoria Coach Station, London. These services travel via Heathrow, Plymouth, Liskeard, St Austell, Truro, Redruth, Camborne, St Ives and Penzance – stopping at most small towns en route.

National Express

A shuttle bus service operates during the peak spring and summer season (typically from March/May to September/October) between the Trenwith Coach and Car Park and St Ives town centre. From the town centre, Tate St Ives is approximately a 10-minute walk. For details of shuttle bus times and services, please contact St Ives Tourist Information on +44 (0)1736 796297.

St Ives is an historic fishing town with naturally narrow, largely car-free streets. While it’s only a 15–20 minute drive from the A30, driving can be stressful and parking is limited, so it's best to leave the car behind.

The St Erth Park and Ride is a popular option, letting you take in the scenic St Ives Bay train line, or you can park at Trenwith car park and taking the shuttle bus into town. If you plan to drive into St Ives, please plan ahead by visiting the Cornwall Council website.

Please note: Tate St Ives does not have a car park.

We have one parking bay in Barnoon car park for blue badge holders and people with mobility issues. The parking space is free with your gallery ticket. Please book your ticket and parking space at least 24 hours in advance.

Once you have parked, you will enter via the Staff Entrance across the level terrace, approximately 10 metres from the parking space. From here, staff will facilitate your access to the gallery but may not be able to accompany you in the lift to the gallery level.

It is recommended to pre-book your gallery tickets before arrival either online or on the phone when reserving the parking space.

Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden

There is no parking space available at the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Wheelchair provision

Three wheelchairs are available to reserve for free. Bookings should be made at least 24 hours before visiting.

Our passenger lift can accommodate wheelchairs with a width of no more than 80cm and a length of no more than 140cm. If you are using a chair of greater size please contact us and we can support an alternative route to our galleries.

Tate St Ives

There is one main entrance to the gallery. If you require a disabled car parking space, please see the Accessible car parking section of this page.

  • There is a ramp into the main entrance from Porthmeor Beach.
  • A flight of steps with a handrail
  • From inside the building, there is lift access and level access to most areas of the gallery.

Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden

Wheelchair and buggy access to the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden is limited and requires assistance.

The lower floor of the museum is currently not accessible by wheelchair, however a handbook including photographs and detailed description of this space is available to support your visit.

Facilities at Tate St Ives

Information desk

The Information desk at Tate St Ives is located three metres away from the front of the building up an access ramp. Staff are happy to help with any questions you have about the artworks, building and facilities.

  • There is level access to the Information desk from the main entrance.
  • Lighting levels are generally bright but can be lower in some exhibition spaces, staff will be happy to advise.
  • Seating is available in the circular entrance area, within the building and gallery spaces.

Toilets

A fully accessible Changing Places toilet is located close to Gallery 1. It has a height-adjustable changing bench and hoist. There is another accessible toilet close to Gallery 6.

Baby changing facilities

  • The Parent and Baby Room is on the third floor between Gallery 3 and 4. It can accommodate a pushchair.
  • There are also baby changing facilities in the main male and female toilets.

Lift

The lifts at Tate St Ives are suitable for wheelchair users. They give access to all floors at the gallery. If you are using a wheelchair with a width greater than 80cm please contact us and we can support an alternative route to our galleries.

Cloakroom

Coat hooks can be used for free or there are coin-operated lockers at our entrance. Bags and items larger than cabin bag size (55cm x 40cm x 20cm) are not permitted in the building.

Seating

There are seating places in the galleries and foyers. Folding stools and chairs are available for use at any time.

You’ll find the stools and chairs in different locations in the building and can ask a member of staff if you need one bringing to you.

Assistance dogs

We welcome guide dogs, hearing dogs and assistance dogs in the gallery. Drinking bowls are available – just ask a member of staff.

Autism

To help plan your visit to Tate St Ives, have a look at our visual story. It includes photographs and information of what you can expect from a visit to the gallery.

When you get to the gallery, ear defenders can be borrowed from the information desk.

Audio Wall Text

To support visitors who prefer or require audio to engage with written information, the wall texts in our main exhibitions are also available in audio format. QR codes placed directly beneath each text panel allow visitors to scan and listen to a recorded reading on their own device.

Guide dogs

We welcome guide dogs, hearing dogs and assistance animals in the gallery. Drinking bowls are available – just ask a member of staff.

Talking Art

Talking Art sessions run throughout the year at Tate St Ives, designed for visitors who are blind or partially sighted and their friends. They provide detailed spoken descriptions of selected works on display in the changing exhibition, (often which can't be included in touch tours) alongside making activities.

Touch Tours

Available daily at Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden.
Advance booking essential. An opportunity for blind or partially sighted visitors to touch selected sculptures from Tate Collection displays. Accompanied by a Touch Tour Guide, and wearing sculpture conservation gloves, participants are supported to touch and discuss the composition, materials, and histories of selected artworks on display in Modern Conversations at Tate St Ives, and at the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Deaf and hard of hearing visitors

Hearing loops

Hearing loops are fitted at the Information desks at Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Hearing loops are also available on most talks and gallery tours.

BSL talks

BSL interpretation is offered where possible. View upcoming access events at Tate St Ives.

Concessionary admission

The concessions rate applies to students and disabled visitors (companion is free).

£5 tickets are available for recipients of Universal or Pension Credit.

Visitors aged 18 and under can enter the galleries for free with a ticket.

Popular times

Whether you enjoy the lively atmosphere of our galleries or prefer a peaceful visit for leisurely viewing, we have a time that suits your preference.

Peak Hours: Tate St Ives is busiest daily between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

Summer Trends: During the summer, the busiest days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) are generally quieter.

Winter Trends: In winter, this pattern reverses, with weekends becoming more popular.

Communication cards

Communication cards provide a means of visual, or nonverbal, communication.

You can use our communication cards to ask for directions to facilities in the gallery. These include toilet, café, seating, shop, quiet room, and exit. Show one of the cards to a member of Tate staff if you need to be shown to one of these places.

You can download these cards and print at home or save as a PDF on your portable device. There are two colour versions, with white or yellow background. Use whichever version you find easiest to read.
